We anticipate that the Kyrgyzstan Ala Too Trail will draw thousands of visitors each year and inspire even more to plan future visits as the trail develops as an environmental conservation and outdoor recreation natural resource. 

As a new project, there is a lot to communicate how it’s maintained and protected, and how to enjoy it safely and sustainably.

Where does the Trail begin and end?

The trail begins at Kegety Gorge, 90 km SE of Bishkek, or at the other end of trail in Jyrgalan Village, 62 km NW of Karakol.

How long is the Trail, exactly?

530 km or 318 miles

Who is in charge of the Trail?

The Kyrgyz Community Based Tourism Association

How is the Trail funded?

Initial funding for the trail was provided by the USAID Future Growth Initiative. Additional funding sources are now being explored.

I am interested in volunteering for the Trail. Where can I find an opportunity near me? What volunteer roles are available?

Plans are in the works to create a “Friends of the KAT” program.

Does the KCBTA offer any hiker services like hostels, shuttles, etc.?

How do I get to the Trail?

Can I just visit the Trail for a day?

Yes, if the start of the trail section you intend to hike is accessible by car, as indicated on the interactive map.

Does hiking on the Trail cost money? Do I need a permit?

No, but you do need to register on kyrgyzstantrail.com before going on any part of the trail.

What wildlife might I see on the Trail?

Grey marmots: Common between 3,400 and 3,800 meters

Silver mountain voles: Common between 3,400 and 3,800 meters

Field voles: Common between 3,400 and 3,800 meters

Wild rams: Roam in the summer

Hares: Roam in the summer

Mountain goats: Scale cliffs and ledges at higher altitudes

Marco Polo sheep: Have the longest horns of any sheep

Do I need to register my hike with the KCBTA team?

Yes.  Please register by completing the form on kyrgyzstantrail.com before going on any part of the trail.

Can people hike the entire Trail?

Yes.  If you do so it you can expect to complete the Trail in 43 days.

Where can I sleep along the Trail?

Yes.  Depending on the section of the trail you could have access to yurt camps, shepherd’s tents and shepherd’s yurts.  Between Kegeti an Kyzl-Soo, you would need your own sleeping bag.  The KCBTA travel advisors will let you know after you register.

How do people get food along the Trail?

Some sections will require you to pack food, other sections with yurt camps will likely have breakfast and dinner available.  Our KCBTA travel advisors will provide detailed information upon your registration.

Do I need to treat my water?

Along the trail you must bring a water filter and purifying tablets.  When staying in yurt camps, your water will be boiled, so it would be safe to drink.

Where can I purchase maps and guidebooks?

These are not yet available, but you may download maps on the KAT website:  kyrgyzstantrail.com.

Can the KCBTA team help me find a hiking partner?

Yes. When you register your hike, the KCBTA team can help coordinate and organized group departure.
